Ever realized why you are advised or instructed to "behave yourselves" or asked to "calm down' or "let go of the feeling"? These are some common phrases that are told to us whenever there is an outburst of emotions. These phrases are the outcome of fear, that people think can jeopardize the relationship between kith and kin. A relationship refers to the recognition and love that is given to a connection among humans that they cherish. Relationships are the reason for a person's survival, the whole idea of the world revolves around maintaining and nurturing these relationships. We do not choose the relationships we are in; we are bestowed with them since birth and since then it becomes a responsibility to help them grow and develop into a beautiful flower. Relationship management skills are not among the ones that you are to be spoon-fed but something that you gradually come across and learn with experience.

It does not matter if you are social or unsocial, you are always worried about your image in front of people, be it on a personal or a professional front. Your constant effort to maintain your image with your respective characteristics in society reflects your concern towards managing and maintaining cordial relationships with the people you know. It is true, when elders say, "it is easy to end a connection but tough to maintain it". With the term used like "maintenance", it seems like a machine but in a way, it is, a machine where human emotions are always in motion, if you stop nurturing, it might go out of order, break down and fall apart.

To spread love, affection, trust, and respect, you must first inherit these within you. You cannot spread emotions that you do not possess, no matter how hard you try to imitate them.

Human beings are selfish beings, they mend things just so that they can sleep in peace. This attitude of humanity has been witnessed since time immemorial, harsh but true because life skills are the ultimate way to survive. In a nutshell, to assure that your relationship with people is healthy, you need to brush your communication as wells as personality development skills. The key to a healthy relationship is strong and transparent communication.

Here are some tips and tricks that can save you from getting awkward with your dear ones:

  1. Give Some Space:

Do not suffocate the other person, no matter how close they are to you. Give them the appropriate time to grow and heal, time, and space in a relationship is everything. This way, it shows you are concerned and respect that person’s privacy. Understanding and accepting the person as they are is what helps a relationship grow.

2. Empathy:

If you thought people are empathetic towards their blood relatives then you might be hurt here. It is a general human tendency to choose a favorite person or relative among the vast range of blood and non-blood relatives. However, even after this is, there is always a concern in the back of everyone's mind that prays for the well being of their loved ones. You should always keep yourselves in the shoes of your distressed one. This would give them comfort and strength to overcome their problems. It is not a duty you do but you know they deserve to equally happy and in sound health.

3. Strong Communication:

This term has been repeated quite a lot of time in this article to emphasize the fact that is the only way to establish healthy connections. Misunderstandings and miscommunications are part of the relationship cycle. People should understand the power and effectiveness of sensitive communication. Communication does not refer to haphazard talks but a systematic way of speaking, such that it does not hurt your dear ones.

4. Treat Them as An Individual:

The many reasons why relationships strain is because people oblige under the shadow of relationships and give up their aspirations and thoughts they have. This is when you should treat the person like an individual first and then see how you are related to them. This works everywhere in both personal as well as professional.

5. Friends vs Acquaintances:

Know the difference between a friend and an acquaintance, this differentiation will reduce half your problems. This will help you recognize and identify your priorities and boundaries so that you do not go on sharing the deepest secrets with a total stranger.

6. Educate Your Younger Generations:

The way you treat your friends and relatives is how your future generations are going to treat them. Set good and healthy examples for them, tell them that it is okay to have differences in opinion, and still have the same amount of love and respect for them. Always remember to keep children away from the unhealthy brawls between adults.

7. Learn to Let Go:

There are times when you separate from the person over certain unforeseen circumstances and things are not in your favor for the worst. At this moment, it is best to let go of the feelings. Forced conversations can jeopardize and scar the relation, ending it on a bad note.

8. Consult a Counsellor:

Terms like "therapist", "psychiatrist", "counselor" have often been tabooed by society. It is high time to normalize these by speaking about them in the open. It is okay to consult a family or general counselor for advice that can help you understand and relate to human emotions in a better way.

Relationship management skills require a high level of negotiation for both personal and professional sectors. It is impossible to just rely on personality development classes when you also should make efforts to mend things. A person might be independently working and living but at the end of the day, he/she would want human support to lean on. Establishing strong relationships is a sign of a healthy neighborhood and a world that works towards harmony.
