Every citizen has the right to be well-educated. Education comes in many forms but it has the same objective and that is to gain knowledge. There are so many things to learn but without a fair chance at education, many people, from children to teenagers, are missing out on collecting knowledge and with that, a chance to find out what they are passionate about. The Right to Education has been recognized as a human right which means a right to free and compulsory primary education, an obligation to develop secondary education for all, and an obligation to develop equitable access to higher education. In 2019, over 260 million children did not have access to education. India itself is the home of 19% of the world's children. This means India has the largest number of youngsters which can be highly beneficial for the country if the children are provided with proper education and are shown a proper direction for their future.

It is no surprise that education is a powerful tool that can help children and adults to lift themselves up from poverty who are economically and socially marginalized.

The right to education which is reflected in article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states:

“Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit. Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance, and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups, and shall further the activities of the United Nations for the maintenance of peace. Parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children.”

  • As per the amendment, the no-detention policy has been left to the states to decide if they want to follow it or not.

  • The Parliamentary standing committee by whom the bill was analyzed, recommended bringing back the concept of detention in schools.

  • The bill states there should be regular examinations in the class fifth and eighth at the end of the academic year. If a child fails in the examination, the amendment act allows the provision to give him or her additional instructions and then grants the permission to take re-examination within the period of two months.

  • If the student still couldn’t pass the re-examination, the state government has the right to allow schools to hold back the child in his or her respected class.

Importance of Right to Education for Indian Society:

  • Education has broad meaning, application, and importance. But most importantly, education helps an individual to think and question things and see beyond the obvious. It helps a person to stand up and fight for what they believe in.

  • As mentioned above, India is the home of the majority of youngsters in the world. Education will help them find out what they are passionate about and that will lead them to have a successful and safe future. Not only will this help that individual but it will also help the country in many ways.

  • There are still many regions in India that are illiterate and cannot afford education. The Right to Education act promised to provide free and compulsory elementary school education for every child. Since free education also provides provisions of free uniforms, textbooks, etc. many children were able to go to school and educate themselves which improved and lessened the illiteracy rate of the country.

  • The Right to Education Act is said to be an essential step in improving child’s accessibility for secondary and higher-level education. Educated people are found to have their lives in the right direction, they know their goals and work towards achieving them. Secondary and higher level of education is a must for a person to understand what is right and wrong. At this age, many skills like problem-solving, communication, leadership skills can be learned which will help the child their whole life.

  • The Right to Education act is said to be a huge help in bringing India closer to achieving National Education Development goals with its zero-tolerance against harassment and discrimination, ensuring all-round development of children, and quality education for everyone.

  • Free education for Sikhs is becoming an inspiration for other people to start helping underprivileged children in getting free education as it is their right and as a citizen, it is our responsibility. It is important for everyone to take a step towards making India a well-literate country and have a bright future full of well-educated youngsters.

The Right to Education Act needs active participation from citizens of India considering the lack of awareness and responsibility we are still facing regarding the education of children. Education empowers a person to think practice and avoid illusions like superstitions that are still being followed by many.
